Lust, dating and temptation (Matt 5v27-30)

No-one really falls into sin. It is the result of individual choices that accumulate. Will the choices you make today create the future you are hoping for?

Matthew 5v27-30 What’s this about to you?

My 13-year-old son: Jesus teaches about lust. “Be careful what you think about – as well as be careful about what you do.  If you are tempted by being in a particular place, watching a particular programme, reading a certain type of book, magazine or visiting certain internet sites – guess what – you need to change your behaviour – and do something else instead.

One of my friends was watching the Sex Education show and they were talking about “stop pimping our kids”  by putting pornographic magazines next to kids comics or the Page 3 girl in the papers… Even people on TV agree, things have gone too far!”

I remember when I was in Christian Union at University and we were taught simple steps to overcome temptation when dating.

  1. If you are tempted when lying down, sit up,
  2. If you are still tempted when sitting, stand up,
  3. If you are still tempted when standing,
  4. Start walking
  5. If you are still tempted, move to a public place or join a group

No-one really “falls into sin” – we willing and even joyfully take one step after another, until we realise that we are over our heads and either doing or about to do something we perhaps didn’t plan to.   We then feel regret, possibly even repentance where we turn away from doing what we were doing wrong, and towards doing what’s right.  Choose what to step towards and what to step away from as a way of dealing with temptation. Put boundaries and safe systems in place for your own protection.

The bible says we become what we think about, and we become like the company we keep.  Perhaps its time to do a stock take and make sure you like what you are  becoming.  You are literally like modelling clay – you still have chance to change or evolve.  Only you choose to work with God to become all you can be.
