Christian mirror here please! (Matt 5v17-20)
What does being a Christian look like to you? Is it okay to be different or at a different stage to someone else?
Some of you might look at me – and say she’s late to church or she doesn’t come every week. But God knows my reasons… which include a medical condition and I believe it’s okay with Him – so why would you have a problem? We are not supposed to judge other people, the only person who we can change is….. ourselves.
I loved it in the film, “Bruce Almighty” and “Evan Almighty” when they put across the message that “We are the change we want to see in this world” – and that we can achieve it through “one Act of Random Kindness at a time”.
What things do you struggle with?
My 13-year-old son: Small things can really bother you – just because they might be something that you don’t want to do – because it’s boring or it’s hard work. You might be told that when you get up that you have to get up and go out and buy some milk so your family can have some breakfast. But you might wake up and not want to as you are not in the mood – even though your parents have asked you nicely to do it. You know if you don’t do it that your family will be angry or annoyed – but you should do it anyway as you know it will make their morning easier.
If you ask someone to do something for you and they say yes – you expect them to do it. It can be really disappointing and hurtful if they don’t do it. This week I wanted my parents to fill out a form for me and they said they would –and they will – they just didn’t do it to my timescale. I was really annoyed as it meant I went to Air Cadets this week with only one of the forms filled out and I was embarrassed and angry about it.
I know my parents think I do exactly the same just over things like unpacking the dishwasher, tidying my room or other jobs I get given. I am not meaning to let anyone down or be disobedient but I get distracted by things I would rather be doing like playing on my computer, going to the gym, texting or seeing my friends etc.”
Think about the key areas in your life – where you don’t deliver what you’ve promised or what’s expected of you. Are you willing to change that? Where are you willing to change that? What could you do differently?
Matthew5v17-20 -What’s this about to you?
To me – It is about Jesus teaching about the impossibility of perfect righteousness without him. Being a Christian is all about accepting that we can’t make it on our own, nothing we do by ourselves is good enough to meet with God’s standard – but it is as if Jesus comes along and stands in for us – and says – its okay I’ll take the heat on this one. You’re forgiven, you’re clean – as long as we ask Him to forgive.
I once heard a saying, “God loves you as you are, but too much to let you stay that way”. I think that sums things up perfectly. By ourselves, we can never be good enough but with God’s grace and the help of Him and others and by putting our heart and soul into it – We can be different and we can make a difference. Just like the best earthly parents love their children even when they mess up, God loves us a million percent more.
